General Info - H1

SOLID CONSTRUCTION: Many rubber seals are manufactured as solid homogeneous profiles. These solid profiles can either be extruded or molded. Please call us for tolerance information. The next several profile sections of this catalog give some examples of existing tooling; however your design requirements take precedence and can be provided.

HOLLOW CONSTRUCTION: Some rubber seals are made as hollow profiles. Hollow profiles appear to have no performance improvements over solid profiles when used in properly maintained equipment. Cases where the sealing surface is longitudinally uneven have had a hollow profile provide an adequate seal but required more gate movement perpendicular to the seal to allow for required deflection.

RUBBER SEAL CLADDING: Cladding is becoming very popular in more applications as environmental regulations restrict the use of seal cleaners and lubricants. The most commonly used cladding is Teflon ® · , it provides the seal with a self lubricating surface that is flexable. It is recommended that a minimum of 135 degrees of cladding coverage be applied to the sealing face of bulb seals. Consult Seals Unlimited for cladding coverage on other profiles. See page H-4 for Teflon ® · cladding specifications and testing requirements.

The other benefits to cladding are that they are only available in molded profiles and the cladding does not change the size of the profile since it is embedded. Warning: with any cladding, the seals must be handled without creating sharp bends and protected from damage due to handling and installation practices.
